Engine numbers |
According to BSA records, 578 engines were made. In the
record some engine numbers are missing. BSA records were hand-written and
sometimes require deciphering so there is scope for error both in the
original record and reading them now. Were 50 engines taken from the
production line for spares or are the records faulty? The best way to
be sure is to contact the UK
BSAOC who keep record details. |

Frame numbers |
As with engine numbers, check with the UK
BSAOC to be sure. |
Finish |
Finish follows BSA standard practice of the time with
black frame, oil tank, toolbox, headlamp shell, chainguard, yokes, fork legs
and shrouds.
Chrome rims, mudguards and stays, control levers, headlamp rim.
Petrol tanks were supplied in silver, green or black with chrome side panels and black rubber
knee grips.
Despatch records show different colours being shipped to different US
distributors.
For example, the first Super Flash (frame #101) was despatched to
the West Coast distributor Hap Alzina with a green & chrome tank. Frame
#102 went to Rich Child the East Coast distributor with a black and chrome
tank.
This pattern of black for Child and green for Alzina carried on until bike
#192 when bikes for Child had entries showing Silver & Chrome along
with Black and Chrome.
There are no entries for Alzina showing
anything other than green & chrome however, not too much should be made of
this. The despatch records are hand written records by about six
different hands and only one or two of them wrote in the colour details for
every bike the book - different colours may have been sent to both dealers
but not recorded.
Colours were only entered up to bike number 278 when the people who
originally wrote the colour data stopped putting any entries in.
Other countries had a mix of the
three colours and the only other colour entered was for frame number 650
which was entered as Silver and Black.
It is also possible and is supported by anecdotal evidence that if a dealer
ordered enough bikes they could ask for custom specification and colours.
Good colour matches for the tank are ??? and Deltron (US manufacturer)
Universal Base Coat DBU71965 SC. The tinting guide given on the label is:
OMD670, 59.6; OMD646, 4.9; OMD647, 6.6; OMD 618, 61.3; OBX695, 135.2 - this
will mean something to your local paint shop! |

Petrol tanks |
Factory literature shows a small 2 gallon US market tank but
there is some evidence that larger 4.25 gallon tanks were fitted to bikes
shipped in Europe. For example, the tank fitted to the Super Flash at
Monthlery. |
|
Mudguards |
Although factory photos show flat mudguards similar (perhaps
the same) as those fitted to ZB Gold Stars of the time many bikes were
shipped with rounded rear mudguards and this part is listed as
67-6861. The rear lamp/licence holders were different to suit the
different profile. However, some owners claim that the flatter type was
fitted to their bikes. |
